The Best Books about Gustav Stickley

These books provide a valuable resource for anyone interested in collecting or learning about the furniture and other objects made by Gustav Stickley. This is not a complete listing, but a list of the books I find most useful and valuable in my own library.

The Early Works of Gustav Stickley, published by Stephen Gray, Turn of the Century Editions – This book reprints four early Stickley furniture catalogs from 1900, 1901, 1902 and 1905, as well as Craftsman willow furniture and lighting assembled from various catalogs. ($20.00)

The Collected Works of Gustav Stickley, published by Stephen Gray, Turn of the Century Editions – In addition to reprinting Stickley furniture catalogs from 1904 and 1907, this book contains a wealth of materials reprinted from The Craftsman and other sources, as well as a 1905 catalog of Stickley lighting and metalwork. ($20.00)

Craftsman Homes by Gustav Stickley, published by Dover Publications – If you could only own one book that would give you the broadest possible understanding of Stickley’s philosophy and design, ranging from furniture to architecture, this would be the book to own. With 56 articles covering Craftsman home design, gardens, house interiors, furniture finishes, Craftsman linens, and much more, this inexpensive volume is a must have for anyone interested in Gustav Stickley. ($9.72 on amazon.com)

More Craftsman Homes by Gustav Stickley, published by Dover Publications – The companion book to Craftsman Homes, this edition contains floor plans and illustrations for 78 Arts & Crafts style homes. ($10.46 on amazon.com)

Gustav Stickley by David Cathers – David Cathers is the most respected researcher on Gustav Stickley, and this is a lovely book filled with excellent photographs and informative essays devoted to Gustav Stickley. ($44.07 on amazon.com)

Stickley Style by David Cathers and Alexander Vertikoff – This book is more photographically oriented than Cather’s other book, featuring many Arts & Crafts interiors with much less text. Excellent photography and premiere collections make this book a visual treat for anyone decorating in the Arts & Crafts style. This book covers much more territory than a narrow focus on Gustav Stickley. ($25.20 on amazon.com)
